Golf fans break legs in Ireland...

Golf is not a contact sport and neither should spectating be.

At the Irish Open at Lahinch just two weeks before the Open Championship at Portrush, I heard the television commentators mention that on day one, two spectators had independently broken their legs while watching the event. They both had one thing in common (besides the pain). They were wearing flip flops (Thongs for us Aussies). So the moral is: don’t follow golf on a links course without suitable shoes on your feet. Golf shoes could be a good choice but at least something with some gripping tread.

Now we understand why almost universally flip-flops or Thongs are not permitted to be worn on the course, links or any other type.
