Gold Coast Photography | Originally from Northern Ireland, I have been involved in the computer graphics industry since the beginning of the Desktop Publishing revolution in the mid 1980's. I was an account manager for Apple Computer's leading Corporate Reseller in Melbourne, servicing large government and corporate accounts as well as advertising agencies. This was a very dynamic time in the graphics industry when great change was taking place from traditional art methods to the new computer graphics software and all of the early workflow problems from fledgling networking to poor quality colour matching. How things have changed in 20 years. In 1987 a 20Mb Apple external hard drive cost $4,100 whereas today a 1Gb USB "dongle" costs $35 |

Golf Club | I moved to Queensland in 1993. I set up my business, The Right Result. I offered support for graphics professionals (almost exclusively on the Apple Macintosh platform) and also did some database development for local Gold Coast companies. In 1999 I took a step into photography and saw the need to move with the newest revolution: digital photography. This was a relatively easy transition for me following on from my experience with the graphics softwares such as Photoshop, QuarkXpress, Freehand and Illustrator. Initially I scanned transparencies but in May 2001 I purchased a Canon Digital SLR camera which was compatible with the professional lenses I had already acquired. The quality was stunning. And it continues to improve with each new generation of camera. I have recently purchased Pocket Wizard transceivers which provide a very flexible off-camera lighting solution using Canon Speedlites or studio strobes. The Pocket Wizard can fire the flash from a distance of up to 500 metres. I am, at the end of 2007, still exploring the possibilities and doing my research from many informative websites and blogs of experienced pros who have had access to these devices for many years. Learning never seems to stop. The end of 2007 has seen me upgrade to Photoshop CS3 and Apple's new Leopard operating system.

As you may now be realising, I enjoy a challenge and love to lead with the technology where it meets quality requirements. I was a 3 handicap golfer (when I was playing regularly) and can boast 5 holes-in-one during the 80's and a birdie at the Road Hole at St. Andrews. I haven't played much in the last 5 years but can still knock it around in the high 70's if I can keep the rusty double bogies off my card. I was an avid student of the history of golf and took great pleasure as a youth viewing the great golf photos of the time. I've been lucky enough to play some of Britain's championship links including Muirfield, Turnberry, Troon, St Andrews, Royal Portrush, Royal Co. Down, Royal Porthcawl, and other non-links such as The Belfry, Moortown and Walton Heath. An opportunity to combine two passions in my life (golf and photography) has been wonderful for me, and to see my images published in Golf magazines is more than I could have wished for as the youth who played 54 holes every day during school holidays and we walked them all no electric carts in those days. I have supported Manchester United since 1963, through relegation and trophies galore. I've been lucky to see a number of games at Old Trafford and other grounds in England, Ireland and Stadium Australia. Hopefully one day I'll get to photograph them in action at home. I am the webmaster for the Gold Coast Photographic Society. view here I am a Queensland Suitabilty Card Holder #259704/1. David Magahy updated 19/11/07 | ||
